Care guide

Roller Shutter Maintenance

Salt air and fine dust are very persistent little troublemakers. A little regular care keeps your door smooth, quiet and reliable for years.

Why it matters

  • Extends the lifespan of the shutter and motor
  • Reduces the risk of breakdowns and costly repairs
  • Keeps operation smooth and quiet
  • Prevents corrosion and cosmetic damage
  • Keeps safety systems working correctly

How often to clean

Standard environment: every 3–6 months

Coastal, dusty or industrial areas: every 1–3 months

Dirt, salt and debris in the guides and slats are the number one cause of noisy or stiff operation.

Step-by-step cleaning

  1. Inspect first: look for dents, misaligned slats or dirt in the side guides, and listen for scraping.
  2. Fully close the shutter and clean the slats top to bottom with warm water, mild detergent and a soft cloth.
  3. Brush loose debris out of the side guides, wipe them with a damp cloth and clear the drainage holes.
  4. Rinse with clean water and let the shutter air-dry fully before operating.

If something looks very wrong, stop and call us — roller shutters are not the place for DIY heroics.

What not to do

  • No abrasive pads or solvents
  • No pressure washers — your shutter doesn't need a spa day at 150 bar
  • Never oil or grease the guides — oil attracts dust and turns into grinding paste
  • If lubrication is needed, only a dry silicone spray, sparingly, where a technician recommends

Professional service

Motorised roller shutters: every 12 months

Heavy-use or commercial: every 6–12 months

A service checks curtain alignment and slats, guides and fixings, motor limits, safety systems and controls, and adjusts settings — like an MOT for your roller shutter.

Call us sooner if you notice

  • More noise during operation
  • Jerky or uneven movement
  • Slats catching or jamming
  • The shutter stopping partway
  • Delays responding to the remote or switch
